Pre-Academy Recruit Program

Early Hire

The Alaska State Troopers have revamped our hiring process and are excited to introduce the Pre-Academy Recruit (PAR) program.

Flexible Hiring Dates

Traditionally, we hired troopers twice a year to align with our academies starting in January and July.

With the PAR program, recruits can be hired anywhere between 6 weeks and 5 months before an academy begins.

With the Delayed-Hire program, successful applicants can choose to skip the next academy (only one academy) if they are contractually bound to another employer; this is an especially popular program for active-duty military members nearing the end of their contracts.

With the PAR program and the increased number of testing weeks, the entire hiring process can be reduced to as short as three months.

    • PARs receive full recruit pay from the start.
  3. Daily Fitness Hour
    • PARs get an hour each day dedicated to physical fitness.
  4. Comprehensive Department Immersion
    • Participate in numerous patrol ride-alongs.
    • Spend time with various units, such as the Alaska Bureau of Investigation, the Statewide Drug Enforcement Unit, Dispatch, Evidence, civilian support staff, and Judicial Services.
    • Gain a holistic understanding of the department’s operations.
  5. Cultural Integration
    • Learn the AST culture and values.
    • Build relationships with future peers and field training officers.
  6. Pre-Academy Preparation
    • Be better prepared for the Academy, with less stress and more knowledge.
