Duty Stations

Upon graduating from the training academy, trooper recruits are assigned to one of three training posts, in Fairbanks, Palmer or Soldotna. Troopers often spend their first few years working and living in these areas.

Troopers are eligible to make a request to change their duty assignment after they have completed two years of service, and typically move at least one time before they have five years of service. Many of the public safety responsibilities that makes an Alaska State Trooper’s job unique are not available in the training posts and troopers are highly encouraged to pursue rural service opportunities.

While the State of Alaska reimburses up to $10,000 for a new or lateral recruit’s initial moving costs, the  State also pays for a trooper and their family’s moving costs, throughout their career. See AST and AWT pages for more detailed Detachment Information on the many different posts available.
