Alaska Wildlife Troopers

The primary mission of the Division of Alaska Wildlife Troopers is to protect Alaska’s Natural Resources through Wildlife Enforcement.

Alaska Wildlife Troopers also participate in the overall mission of the Department of Public Safety, through enforcement of criminal laws and participation in Search and Rescue operations. They complete the same DPS Training Academy curriculum as Alaska State Troopers, as well as an AST Field Training and Evaluation Program.

Training

Alaska Wildlife Troopers attend the same academy as Alaska State Troopers, in Sitka. Once they graduate from the academy, they enter a hands-on AST Field Training and Evaluation Program (FTEP) in the community in which they will be stationed. Upon completing FTEP, AWT Troopers participate in additional wildlife and fisheries specific training, so they are fully prepared for the job and mission.

Special Assignments

The Division of the Alaska Wildlife Troopers are the primary wildlife and fisheries law enforcement in the state. By conducting patrols and investigating resource violations, they effectively control wildlife and fisheries crimes. The immense size of our state requires the Alaska Wildlife Troopers maintain and operate aircraft and vessels to support enforcement across rural areas of Alaska.
